Directions

With the excellent road network motorists from the south should use the M6, M74, M8 to Greenock and then the A8 to Gourock and catch either the Caledonian McBrayne or Western Ferry to Dunoon.

Western Ferries run a very frequent service and conveniently disembark immediately opposite the Royal Marine Hotel.

Glasgow Airport is only 40 minutes away. However, for a truly scenic drive there is an alternative route A82 by the shores of Loch Lomond and the A815 to Dunoon.

Things to see and do

New Lanark World heritage Site, New Lanark - A full day out exploring the award winning attractions of the historic village, or do a bit of shopping at the Edinburgh woollen mill. There is something for everyone and only one hours drive from either Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Falls of Clyde, New Lanark - Take a walk up the spectacular falls of Clyde and experience the magnificent views of the four waterfalls. Why not book an organised walk to see the badgers, flora and fauna and more.

House, Mauchline - The house has been restored to a modern museum, with most of the house being devoted to Burns himself. There are other local exhibits on display.

Burns National Heritage Park, Alloway - Explore burns country and visit all the famous places including the cottage, monument and the ‘Brig O Doon’, then enjoy a walk around the visitor centre.

Culzean Castle and country Park, South Ayrshire - Has been restored and contains the fine collection of artwork and furniture. Why not take a walk around the miles of woodland, relax in the gardens or try the adventure playground.

Dundonald Castle, Kilmarnock - Was built for Robert II in 1371. Accessible to all parts of the castle, there is about a 30 metres climb to the top although the views you get on a clear day over the Southern highland mountains or to the isle of Arran are amazing.

Heads of Ayr Park and Off Road Centre, Ayr - Have a relaxing pony ride or try the excitement of the quad bikes. Wonder around the rare and exotic animals both indoors and outdoors.

Kelburn Castle, Largs - It is still a lived in castle by the Earl. Explore the magnificent gardens and views over the Firth of Clyde, take a walk and visit the waterfalls and gorges.

Loudoun Castle, Galston -There are over 500 acres of countryside; whether its punch ‘n’ judy to macdonalds farm or twist ‘n’ shout to the log flume, there is something for everyone. If you want to relax why not visit the ruins of Loudoun Castle itself.

Threave Castle c/o Historic Scotland, Castle Douglas - The massive tower is situated on an island in the river Dee and was built in the late 14th century.

Caerlaverock Castle c/o Historic Scotland, Dumfries - One of Scotland’s finest castles and is thought of as a Medieval Fortress. This moated castle has a children’s adventure park, model seige engine and nature trail.

Cardoness Castle c/o Historic Scotland, Gatehouse of Fleet - This 15th Century tower house stands on a rocky platform above the Fleet water. Cardoness Castle was the ancient home of the McCullochs.

MacLellan’s Castle c/o Historic Scotland, Kircudbright - Built in 1577 using stone from an adjoining ruined monastery by the Provost Sir Thomas MacLellan. This building has fine architectural detail.

Logan Botanic Gardens. Stranraer - Luxuriate amoung the array of bizarre and beautiful plants the flourish outdoors in Scotland’s most exotic garden.

Drumlanrig Castle,Thornhill - Art works by Leonardo, Rembrandt, and Holbein and held at this 17th century castle. Extensive gardens and country parks can also be found.

Floors Castle, Kelso - Largest inhibited castle in Scotland and is home to the Duke of Roxburghe. Spectacular staterooms with priceless paintings and tapestries. Also has beautiful extensive grounds and gardens.

Dundrennan Abbey c/o Historic Scotland, Dundrennan - Mary, Queen of Scots spent her last night on Scottish soil in this Cistercian Abbey. It was built in the 12th century and stands in a small secluded valley.

Sweetheart Abbey c/o Historic Scotland, New Abbey - The splendid remains of a late 13th century Cistercian Abbey founded by Devorgilla, Lady of Galloway in memory if her husband.

Creetown Gem Rock Museum and Crystal Cave, Newton Stewart - A world class collection of gems, crystals, minerals and fossils. Also see the Professors study and the workshops.

Museum of Lead Mining, Wanlockhead - Visitors can explore the rich culture and heritage of Wanlockhead and its people.

Jedburgh Abbey c/o Historic Scotland, Jedburgh - A majestic building founded by David the 1st in 1138. The visitor centre contains the priceless Jedburgh Comb and other Artefacts found during excavations.

Melrose Abbey c/o Historic Scotland, Melrose - At one time probably the richest Abbey in Scotland. The remains of this 16th century Abbey is believed to be the burial place of Robert the Bruce’s heart.
